The Shawnee Kennel Club is a local all-breed club and actively supports AKC activities and purebred dogs. Our core group is made up of local breeders, owners, and handlers of both conformation and performance dogs of many breeds.
Any canine enthusiast can join our club. We have individuals and families (with and without junior members). If you aren't ready to join the club, join a class and have some fun with your dog!
We ask that perspective members join us at a couple of meetings and show some interest in our classes. Helping out at shows is a great way to get involved! The annual member ship fees are $10 per individual and $15 for families.
Most of these classes are set up to teach skills. Often, you won't bring your dog to the first class but will learn what to expect and how to get the most out of the class, including homework. The ongoing class, conformation handling, has dogs and puppies at all stages of preparedness -- just like at a real show.
Sometimes there will need to be a break in classes. During the winter it’s not uncommon to have a snow day and obedience classes may have a few weeks break between classes. During the summer, we must take a break during the fair. Sessions are planned for a 12 week period, if nothing dire happens, we will use week 11 for brush up and the 12th week is used for testing (CGC and CGCA).
Most of the dogs you will see in these classes are not only expensive pieces of property, but also members of families. They go home to children and other dogs, all of which may be vulnerable to diseases and parasites. We ask that no one attend class who is sick, and we check that all dogs are vaccinated against rabies. We recommend other vaccinations, regular deworming schedules, flea and tick control, and regular baths/grooming for all dogs. When in doubt, ask for our list of recommended preventative health measures or speak to your veterinarian.
Classes range from $100 to $250 for a ten week course. Class sizes are limited and payment is expected before classes begin. Preregistration requirements include proof of vaccination. Exact class dates will be announced at least a month in advance.
